U.S. federal and state drinking water regulations

In April 2024, EPA announced the first federal drinking water standards for six PFAS chemicals , including PFOA and PFOS. Learn more about these standards from Silent Spring Institute.

Prior to the announcement, about two dozen states in the U.S. had proposed or adopted their own guidelines or enforceable standards. Some of these addressed individual PFAS chemicals, while others addressed multiple PFAS chemicals combined. In light of the new federal standards, many states are re-evaluating their own state regulations.
